The World Table Tennis Championships are coming to town. The world’s best ping pongers are rollin’ into Suzhou to, once again, show the world that China crushes all on the table tops. I’ll be heading down the to courts (?) to root on the ol’ red, white and blue and ruin as many ‘fire up China!” chants as I can. America faces 1000/1 odds but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t head down the Expo Center to check out the elite athletes in person.
Get your flags ready and, if you’re white like me, dress well because you’re probably going to be on CCTV 5. Get ready China, Team America is coming to town (team photo unavailable….probably not a good sign).
American Grant Li is coming to Suzhou to paddle some non-American backside into submission.
Getting your tickets
The nose bleeds sold out long ago but good tickets are still available. I’ve bought some 80 RMB tickets online but those are going fast. Tickets run from 10-1,080 RMB. I wonder if you get to sit next to the players if you pay 1,080 RMB to watch ping pong. I mean, come on, 1,080 RMB? Maybe you get back stage passes for the after party on May 3rd. Either way, it’s time to get off your duff and get clicking for tickets.
The tournament runs from April 27-May 3.
Most of the games will be held in the Suzhou International Expo Center located on Jinji lake. You can access the Expo Center via the subway (line 1). Just get off at the expo center stop and follow the crowd.
Who knows, maybe I’ll see you there.
